How to mix concrete for outdoor statues?
The amount and quantity needed for concrete mixing depend on the size of the concrete art you intend to make. The tools and equipment required to mix the ingredients also are affected by the size of the concrete statue or figurine you intend to make.
In our example, we intended to make a garden gnome in that the ingredients can be mixed in a bucket.
Ensure to acquire the right amount of cement, sand, and stone. The correct ratio is determined by the type of cement you purchase. Make sure to read the manufactures instruction before mixing.
A rule of thumb is that you need one part cement, two parts sand, and four parts stone.
All the ingredients need to be set out before the mixing begins. Assemble all the ingredients before pouring them ingredients for mixing. Using an electric mixer, you can mix the ingredients in the bucket with your hand.
Other tools that can be used for mixing are your garden hoe and shovel.
You can pour one part cement, two-part sand, and 4 part gravel into your bucket. Begin mixing the ingredients in the bucket with the appropriate mixing tools. The mixer must be mixed thoroughly to allow the ingredients to be uniformly mixed.
Once thoroughly mixed, dig a small crater at the center of the cement mix. Slowly add water to the mix. The water needs to be enough so that the consistency of the mixer is a smooth paste.
Immediately clean the tools that you used to pour the concrete mix. If left uncleaned, the remaining cement mixer will dry and be difficult to clean out later. Pour water into the bucket and empty the contents. Clean the shovel by submerging it in water; Scrub off the excess cement with a stiff brush.
What is Mortar?
Mortar is a thick mixture of water, sand, and cement. With the addition of lime to the mixes, the durability of the mortar is improved. The water content in mortar is higher than in concrete. Mortar is commonly sold in a pre-mixed form that can be easily combined with water to produce smaller cement statues and figurines.
Portland cement concrete is the most commonly used cement, but masonry mortar is a close second.
How to Mix Mortar.
The ingredients required to make mortar are simpler than concrete mix. Ensure that all components and tools are ready before starting the mixing process. The ingredients needed for making mortar are masonry cement and fine sand.
Masonry cement is made by manufacturers where portland cement is intergrind with lime. If you cannot get masonry cement, the other option will be to acquire portland cement and lime mortar.
Before mixing the masonry cement and sand, ensure the bucket is pre-wet. Add the required amount of cement and sand into the bucket. You can use your hand to mix the cement and sand. We do recommend a shovel or electric mixer.
Add water to the dry ingredient. Keep adding water until the water is mixed in and has a smooth consistency. The right consistency is when the mortar holds its shape when you make a hole in the mix.
Clean your tools with water to prevent the remaining mix from drying out and solidifying.
What is the difference between mortar and concrete?
